Freshman grappler continues to excel

January 26, 2004

MSU wrestling struggled again this weekend in its attempt to make a showing against additional ranked opponents.

On Friday, the team dropped its first Big Ten competition, falling 22-16 to No. 12 Minnesota. Despite the loss, the team recorded five wins in individual matches.

Redshirt freshman Andy Simmons, sophomore Darren McKnight and seniors Arsen Aleksanyan and Nate Mesyn all took home individual victories.

The Spartans again failed to capture a victory on Sunday as it fell to No. 2 Illinois 22-10, dropping the team's record to 1-6 overall, 0-2 Big Ten.

Simmons, sophomore Jeff Clemens and senior Ryan L'Amoreaux each recorded wins.

The team will next compete against Michigan at 7 p.m. on Friday in Ann Arbor.
