Women's basketball wins exhibition game

November 17, 2003

The MSU women's basketball team ended its exhibition season Friday by beating the Premier All-Stars, 85-40.

Four Spartans finished in double figures with freshman guard Victoria Lucas-Perry leading with 19 points. Junior guard Kristin Haynie added 15 and sophomore guard Lindsay Bowen and freshman guard Rene Haynes each scored 13 points.

The Premier team was plagued with injuries during the Friday night competition. The All-Stars had only five players after less than 15 minutes of play, and MSU responded by playing a five-freshmen lineup for the remainder of the game. The freshmen outscored the remaining All-Stars 24-14.

MSU finished the game shooting 47.7 percent from the field and 47.6 from the 3-point range.

The Spartans also announced the addition of four recruits. MSU women's basketball coach Joanne P. McCallie said four players have signed national letters of intent to join the Spartan program in 2004-05.

The new Spartans include Courtney Davidson of Youngstown, Ohio, Maggie Dwyer of Grand Haven, Mich., Laura Hall of Temperance, Mich., and Melanie Small of Copley, Ohio.

"We are really excited about this class," McCallie said. "They are talented in every way and bring a great deal of energy to our team. They have the ability to lead, and they all offer different strengths. There's no doubt that all of them will compete for playing time and will make an impact."
