'U' shuts out Buckeyes
Fewer shot attempts and fewer corner kicks led the MSU women's soccer team to a 1-0 loss to Ohio State Sunday in Columbus, Ohio.MSU only attempted 11 shots to OSU's 19, relying on senior goalkeeper Stacy Heller to stop the Buckeyes from scoring, which she did five times.
The Spartans also allowed three corner kicks, one of which returned the Buckeyes' only goal.
Lutz resigns as coach
Sixth-year associate coach Matt Gianiodis will serve as interim head coach for the 2003-04 season.
Lutz was diagnosed with chronic mononucleosis, Epstein-Barr virus infection and chronic fatigue syndrome in March. He "cut out all physical activity," then showed no improvement in recent tests, Lutz said.
"I need to walk the walk about keeping promises," Lutz said, referring to his family as his highest priority and how he needs to devote more energy to them.
Lutz also said he stepped down "for the best interest of the team. If I got worse, they would be really stuck."
Field hockey wins 2
MSU lifted its record to 9-3 overall (2-0, Big Ten) after scoring five goals in eight minutes and 39 seconds en route to a 5-0 shutout of Stanford on Saturday at the MSU Field Hockey Complex.
Junior midfielder Veerle Goudswaard helped score each of MSU's three goals in the shutout of Northwestern on Friday, with one goal and two assists.
Northwestern's offense was as tough to beat as the rain, wind and cold, but MSU sophomore goalkeeper Christina Kirkaldy was ready for everything, earning a shutout.
Minnesota game Oct. 18
The game would have been rescheduled if the Minnesota Twins had advanced to the American League Championship Series. The Metrodome is home to the Twins and Minnesota Vikings as well as the Golden Gophers' football team.
The Twins lost to the New York Yankees 8-1 Sunday in game four of the American League Championship Series, falling in the series 3-1.
