It's great that the Spartans have East Lansing excited about football again. John L. Smith's squad is leading the Big Ten with a mark of 4-0 (7-1 overall) - look out Michigan. MSU is winning as a team. There is no No. 1. There are no names on the jerseys.
And there will be no media campaign for any individual awards. But Jeff Smoker - the pride of Manheim, Pa., and Spartan football fanatics everywhere - is being mentioned nationally for one such individual award: The Heisman Trophy.
At voteheisman.com, fans can vote for their favorite Heisman candidate.
As of 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, University of Mississippi quarterback Eli Manning has 48,282 online votes. Smoker has 2,421.
So if you bleed green, get online and cast a vote for our quarterback. Let's face it: At this point, Smoker is merely a dark horse. But a few big wins over the tough upcoming opponents, and our Comeback Kid just might be in the thick of the race. And a little online fan support couldn't hurt.
