Slater's five-point game earns award

MSU hockey forward Jim Slater was named the CCHA Offensive Player of the Week after equaling a career-best five points against Western Michigan on Saturday. Slater notched two goals and three assists in the 7-3 win at Lawson Arena.

The junior ignited the game's offense Saturday in the sixth minute of the first period off an assist from freshman forward Tommy Goebel. His second goal of the evening came in the 14th minute of the third from assists from junior forward Mike Lalonde and freshman defenseman Tyler Howells.

Slater assisted a season-first goal for sophomore forward David Booth and set up Lalonde and Goebel for two more.

Leading the team with 11 points (7 goals, 4 assists), Slater ranks No. 1 in scoring in the conference and ranks sixth in the nation with 1.83 points per game. With 11 points, Slater is tied with Michigan Tech's Chris Conner for the national scoring lead, while his seven goals are first in the CCHA and rank eighth in the country.
