Local, national comedians visit Dollar

October 9, 2003

Knock, knock. Who's there? Lettuce. Lettuce who? Lettuce in, won't you?

If that joke made you snicker a little bit, get prepared to laugh your socks off this weekend at The Dollar Nightclub, 3411 E. Michigan Ave. in Lansing.

At 8 p.m. on Sunday, this dance spot will be transformed into a comedy club and will host a night filled with laughs bound to be better than any knock-knock joke you've ever heard.

"Laugh-A-Mania" is an all-star comedy show featuring a slew of comedians such as James Stephens III, Tommy Chunn and Lansing-area comedian Fred Potter. The headliner of the show is nationally renowned comic Tommy Davidson.

"It's been a year and a half since I've done anything around here," Potter said. "I want everyone and anyone to come out and have a good time."

Potter said he usually performs out-of-state, but said doing his act in Lansing is like coming back to his roots.

His main aim of the night, as obvious as it is, is to make people cackle, giggle or roar with laughter.

"I get paid to make people laugh," Potter said. "It's not the money aspect, it's just the joy to make someone smile."

Potter's show will feature a mixed approach to entertainment, including comedy and music.

"I like to sing, but not a lot," Potter said. "I just like to entertain versus getting people (in the audience) involved."

Unlike some comedians, he said he doesn't like to poke fun at the audience.

"I just pretty much talk and entertain," Potter said. "I know how to adjust to any audience."

Potter said he got his start in comedy while he was a high school student.

"I got compliments from friends," he said. "I was the 'class clown,' but I wasn't a clown in class."

Sharing the stage with Potter will be host James Stephens III, who starred on HBO's "Def Comedy Jam."

Stephens said while he's glad to be performing Sunday, it's the audience who should be excited for the show.

"Comedians, we don't get excited about the show," he said. "It's just another gig for us."

And the nature of comedy is pretty simple, he said.

"Basically, you make people happy," Stephens said. "It's making a living making people happy, and that's the best living you could make."

Stephens has the ability to mix improvisation, music and comedy into each of his acts.

"I play piano, guitar, trumpet and bass," Stephens said. "I play instruments and sing."

But that isn't all Stephens has planned for his time on stage.

"I'm going to take my clothes off," he said. "I'm going to get naked."

Whether his claim to strip for the audience is true or not, the audience will have to go to the show to find out.

Other performers Sunday night will be Detroit native Tommy Chunn and original cast member of "In Living Color" Tommy Davidson.

Chunn has appeared on the "Def Comedy Jam: Prime Time" special, the "60 Minutes" comedy special and has appeared on stage with comedy legends such as Martin Lawrence, Dennis Miller and Richard Pryor.

With Davidson as the headliner, the audience can expect great acting and comedic and musical skills.

Every Saturday, Davidson can be seen on Fox's "The NFL Show."

Tickets for the side-splitting event are available at Metro Music Paging, 3916 Martin Luther King Blvd., Jam Music, 3928 W. Saginaw Highway and The Dollar Nightclub, 3411 E. Michigan Ave., all in Lansing. Doors will open for the stand-up event at 7 p.m. and the show will start at 8 p.m.
