'Belligerent' man hospitalized

Window broken after E.L police restrain man

Lt. Mike Montgomery and Cpat. Pat Nakfoor of the East Lansing Fire Department clean glass and blood off a sidewalk outside of Bell's Greek Pizza, 225 M.A.C. Ave., after an unidentified man backed into the restaurant's window. He was later released from Lansing's Sparrow Hospital.
From Staff Reports

Emy Iskra said the scene she watched unfold between Bohemian Barber and Bell's Greek Pizza on M.A.C. Avenue on Thursday afternoon looked like something from the television show COPS.

A 25-year-old man reportedly was waving a stick and harassing people passing on the sidewalk before backing into the window of Bell's, 225 M.A.C. Ave., and being shot with beanbag ammunition by the East Lansing Police.

The incident left a trail of blood and glass on the sidewalk between Bell's and the Riviera Cafe Restaurant & Lounge, 231 M.A.C. Ave.

"He was screaming and yelling belligerently," Iskra said. "I felt sorry for him."

Graduate student Erica Ledis, an employee of Bell's, said the man came in the building several times Thursday afternoon before the incident happened. He was asking questions and was visibly confused.

Ledis said employees frequently see the man in the area, usually picking up cans, but said there was something different about him that day.

"He came in again and asked us if we knew where he was supposed to be," she said. "That was strange."

Tori Wade, an employee of Bohemian Barber, 223 M.A.C. Ave., witnessed the man's actions and became scared that he would threaten sales. After about 30 minutes, she said she called East Lansing police.

"These things happen all the time," Wade said. "But I never expected it to end up like this."

Ledis said she, too, called police after the man left Bell's and struck the window with his elbow, cracking the glass but not shattering it.

After police arrived on the scene, Lansing resident John Fossum said the man became angry.

"The police showed up and told him to get on the ground and he started growling," Fossum said. "He just seemed very disoriented the whole time."

The man then backed into the window of Bell's, shattering the glass and cutting his face.

Amy Field was eating at El Azteco with friends when she came out to see what the fuss was.

"I saw a second of it," she said. "He seemed really, really scared. He was surrounded by the cops so he was right to be scared. They shot him and jumped on top of him and he offered no resistance."

East Lansing police Sgt. Brian Horn said the man obviously was delirious and his behavior was erratic when police arrived on the scene.

"We ended up using mace and beanbags," Horn said.

Fossum described the scene as a "bloody mess," and police and firefighters worked to hose off the sidewalk after controlling the situation.

"It looked as if he had cut his forehead just above his nose, but it was difficult to tell," Fossum said.

Ledis said Bell's planned to stay open for business, and would call clean-up crews and a glass repair shop as soon as possible.

The man was transported to Lansing's Sparrow Hospital for treatment and then was moved to Community Mental Health.

"Thank goodness for the mace and beanbags," Horn said. "The incident could have ended up much worse."
