Eatery features new sandwich

Restaurant caters to college crowd with odd creations

September 10, 2003
Steve Myers, a 2002 criminal justice graduate rolls a dub as he cooks at Menna&339;s Joint in Hannah Plaza.

There's a new restaurant in East Lansing that is unlike any other eatery around.

Menna's Joint, 4790 S. Hagadorn Road, which opened Aug. 20, is built for the college student, owner and former MSU student Joe Conrad said.

"We're completely brand-new," Conrad said. "Students don't even know we exist yet."

Serving specialty sandwiches called dubs, Menna's Joint is unlike any other food around East Lansing because it's neither pizza nor subs, Conrad said.

"We wanted to do something different," Conrad said. "So we decided on a dub."

A dub looks like a golden-brown, grilled tortilla stuffed full with chunks of potatoes and different types of meats such as chicken, steak or Italian sausage. They also fill these meal-in-your-hand dubs with an assortment of cheeses such as jack, cheddar, Swiss and American.

And for the vegetarians out there, meatless dubs are available.

Menna's Joint also provides breakfast dubs served from opening until close.

"We'll bring you a breakfast dub to your dorm room any time of day," Conrad said. "It's not smart to drink and drive for breakfast at night, so let us do it for you."

On the inside, Menna's Joint is decorated with flashy posters featuring "Jaws," "The Big Lebowski," "Back to the Future" and Bob Marley, just to name a few.

"I didn't want a corporate look to it," Conrad said.

"And I also wanted a place to offer students more than just food."

Located on the wall with bar-stools and a wooden bar for students to sit at are multiple Internet connections for those who might want to check their e-mail while eating.

"We have Internet access for free for people with laptops," Conrad said. "And we're always going to have on all Spartan games, Lions games and Pistons games."

Menna's Joint is also the only place in East Lansing that delivers Red Bull to keep cramming college students awake.

Customers are enjoying the food, Conrad said, and they are also taking note of the size of the meal they receive for the money they pay.

"Oh my God, that is huge," said Donna Housely, a MSU research associate, as she opened her wrapped dub.

Housely said she was on her way to another restaurant when she saw Menna's Joint and had a change of mind.

"I thought I'd try something new," she said. "I'm going to have to cut this in half it's so big."
