Council welcomes opinions

September 23, 2003

MSU students and city residents could have a chance to voice their opinions tonight at two meetings being held at the East Lansing City Hall, 410 Abbott Road.

The University Student Commission will hold their first meeting of the year at 5:30 in Conference Room A.

The group works with East Lansing officials on issues concerning the university and is composed of representatives from various student organizations. There are at-large positions as well.

Final appointments to the commission are still being made, including two students who could be appointed Tuesday by the East Lansing City Council. But after those appointments, there will still be two vacant spots that need to be filled.

Lynsey Little, the ASMSU representative on the commission, said she will update the group on events and city council decisions that happened over the summer.

ASMSU is MSU's undergraduate student government.

Little said the commission also hopes to establish leadership positions and will heavily discuss the new party-noise ordinance that the council passed earlier this month.

Students are encouraged to sit in on the meeting, and Little said they may have a chance to voice their opinions if a public comment period is provided.

The East Lansing City Council will hold its final work session of the month at 7 p.m. in Conference Room A of city hall with a designated time for public comment.

The council plans to discuss the definition of "house-sitting."

Howard Asch, director of Code Enforcement and Neighborhood Conservation, will work with the council to determine whether the current housing ordinance is effective.

The ordinance provides an exception for rental licenses on property where owners are going away for a short period of time, such as university professors taking sabbaticals, Asch said.

It allows the owners to have two people occupy the premises until the owner returns, Asch said. The house sitters are allowed to stay for up to two years during a five year period.

The council is concerned that residents without licenses use the ordinance to treat the house as a rental, Asch said.

Other items slated to be discussed include budget amendments, a clean cities resolution and vacancies on various city commissions.
