Broadway play: Gender differences good

September 18, 2003

If you and your significant other are on shaky ground, "Defending the Caveman" might be the remedy for smooth sailing.

Beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Wharton Center's Pasant Theatre is the longest running solo play in Broadway history, Rob Becker's "Defending The Caveman.

"Kevin Burke, star of the one-man play, said "Defending the Caveman" is a play that explains the differences between men and women in a humorous way and shows how those differences often make us misunderstand one another.

The premise of the solo show dates back to cave times when men were hunters and women were gatherers, he said.

"People love this show," said Burke, an Indiana native. "All the universal themes that hold true in 'Caveman' hold true for both of us. Working on this show has opened my eyes to a lot of things."

Burke, a former circus clown for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, said one-man plays tend to be difficult because you are not talking to anyone else on stage.

"You do have an acting partner, but they are not on stage," he said. "It's a conversation with the audience. It's all you so your energy and commitment has to be 100 percent."

Erin Warford, an interior design freshman, said she's skeptical the show might only have a man's point of view but said that won't discourage her from attending.

Warford said she's interested in hearing a man's perspective on why members of the opposite sex think and act the way they do.

"It's impossible for women to get (men) because our minds don't work the same way," she said.

Telecommunication sophomore Randolph Flick said he also likes to see other points of view.

Flick said being able to communicate with your significant other is the key to a successful relationship.

"Eye candy is one thing, but you have to be able to talk to the girl," he said.
