Soccer unbeaten in preseason

The Spartans remained undefeated through two preseason exhibition games with a 1-0-1 record at the 2003 IPFW Soccer Showcase.

On Sunday, the MSU men's soccer team downed Kentucky 2-0. The match was scoreless through the first half until senior forward Craig Hearn blasted the game-winner past Wildcat goalkeeper Jarret Christie with 53:30 left.

MSU added to its second goal in the 86th minute thanks to junior midfielder Udo Seidel, who tapped in a cross from junior defender Dave Perlin to put the Spartans ahead by a pair.

Spartan defense held the Wildcats to eight shots while offering up 14 of their own.

Senior Mike Robinson and freshman Jason Tillman split time in net for the Spartans. Robinson collected three saves in the first half before handing the job to Tillman, who preserved the shutout with two stops in the remainder of the match.

On Friday, the Spartans narrowly missed collecting a win against Rutgers, holding a 1-0 lead into the 81st minute of the game until the Scarlet Knights got one by Robinson.

The Spartan's lone goal came from junior defender Kellen Kalso who booted a penalty kick by goalkeeper Scott Conway at 41:27 to give MSU the lead.

Scarlet Knight midfielder Chris Karcz returned the favor with less than 10 minutes to go in the match, notching an unassisted strike at 80:39 to deadlock the game.

MSU begins its season by hosting the MSU/Radisson Fall Classic on Sunday. MSU kicks off the classic against Xavier at 12 p.m.
