Columbia shuttle report means NASA has to update safety, return to life away from Earth

Apparently Houston has a problem. In a 248-page report compiled after the fall of the Columbia space shuttle last February, investigators said that without major changes to NASA's safety procedures, another accident could occur.

If there is anything positive that might come from the Columbia tragedy, it is that light has been shed on NASA's shortcomings.

NASA should not cower shamefully in dark corners over its mistakes but rather step forward and continue its mission to advance space exploration. The seven victims who died in the shuttle are heroes.

They knew full well they were in a field of work in which where risks would be taken. They put their lives on the line for the advancement of technology - for the possibility of a better life for the rest of us.

But changes should indeed be made to ensure the safety of future space travelers.

Sean O'Keefe, NASA administrator, said to space agency employees, "We are, all of us at NASA, a part of the solution." Hopefully that statement will be proven true in the coming months. The Columbia Accident Investigation Board issued a total of 29 recommendations with six regarding organizational changes within NASA. Living in this age of technology and information, it is surprising that more emphasis is not placed upon space exploration.

Whether by human error or misfortune there is always danger in an astronaut's line of work. An astronaut is doing just as much good for society as a firefighter or police officer, and credit should be given to these brave individuals.

It is heartening to see that NASA is continuing after the Columbia accident and vowing to make the effort to increase safety checks and procedures. America is a country founded on exploration; were it not for the inquiring minds and fearless motivation of the early explorers and pioneers, this would not be the country it is today.

And so it is with space, the "final frontier." It is important for us and for future generations that we continue to probe the mysterious void that surrounds our planet.

The possibilities that lie in space are as countless as the stars.
