Don't hide trial

FBI shouldn't keep public out of Detroit case involving deportation of suspected "threat"

The FBI believes it is possible for a person to be a "threat to national security" but not be a terrorist. They also believe closing the doors to and hiding parts of a deportation case is acceptable.

Nabil al-Marabh was arrested and placed on the FBI's terrorism watch list and now faces deportation to Syria, his native country but fears returning to because of the threat of torture.

The problem with the trial in Detroit is a judge recently ruled parts of the case can be closed to the public, while Al-Marabh's lawyer, Tamara French, has said her client wants an open hearing.

Federal authorities want the case to remain closed because they fear classified information will be released, but the public should be able to view the case in its entirety to discover why the government has said this man is a threat.

The more secretive the government becomes, the less supportive people will be of its decisions. The actions of the government in this case, thus far, do not sound like one of democratic America, the supposed capital of the free world - it sounds a country ruled by a harsh dictator.

Al-Marabh was arrested for crossing the U.S. border with fraudulent papers. This is where the deportation comes into play. But with the way the government is handling the case, it looks like he is being deported because he is a terrorist even though they have admitted they don't have any evidence that he is a terrorist.

With cases like this, the government should approach with extreme caution. The bombs Saddam Hussein was supposedly hiding have yet to be found, and there is already a breech of trust with the government due to actions like this.

The FBI, and the rest of the government agencies and officials, are claiming people are threatening us, but we have not seen any proof. They should be more than willing to share the facts of this case with the public if Al-Marabh is, in fact, someone who could be considered a terrorist or pose a great threat to us, and therefore be prosecuted.
