One of the newest eateries to grace the outskirts of campus, Vietopia Café serves up traditional Vietnamese dishes and desserts, and is a unique alternative to your everyday burger joint.
The restaurant, named with a blend of "Vietnamese" and "utopia," is open until 4 a.m., and is just that - a utopia for late-night coffee runs and studying. Most menu items such as noodle soup and rice run about $6, but we still managed to budget a hearty lunch for less than five bones.
The food: A grilled chicken sandwich ($3.19) and a large (24-ounce) root beer ($1.49)
Total with tax: $4.96
Place: Vietopia Café, 611 E. Grand River Ave., (517) 324-7047
Hours: 7:30 a.m.-4 a.m., every day.
Delivery: As of now, Vietopia Café does not offer delivery.
Xtras: The sandwich comes with some crunchy seasoned cucumber slices, and if you're feeling brave, add jalapeños for free. If you're willing, scrounge your pockets for seven more pennies and replace the root beer with a salted lemon soda - a carbonated salty lemonade.
Our thoughts: Hands down a tasty alternative to sub sandwiches. Filled with carrots, cucumbers, caramelized onions, parsley and not a drop of greasy, fatty mess, the grilled chicken sandwich was marinated in a yummy dressing similar to a Thai peanut sauce. Even though it doesn't come with a side dish such as fries, we found the 6" sandwich on a French baguette to be quite filling.
