Fugitives arrested with outstanding warrants

Michigan State Police's Lansing post conducted a weeklong round up of 47 fugitives taken from Ingham and surrounding counties.

The sweep code-named "Operation Dragnet 03" covered Ingham, Eaton and Clinton counties from May 21 through June 4 in an effort to arrest individuals with outstanding arrest warrants in the state.

Michigan State Police Sgt. Kyle McPhee said the operation wasn't to capture dangerous criminals.

"We didn't have any serious felons wanted for crimes like homicide," McPhee said. "Those are usually picked up right when the crime happens."

Of the arrests, a 40-year-old Lansing woman was taken in on a outstanding traffic warrant issued in 1990 from the 56-2 District Court in Charlotte by Officer David Service.

"It's quite unusual for a warrant to go that long and not get picked up by the police," McPhee said.

The fugitives were arrested for offenses varying from misdemeanor traffic warrants to felony crimes committed against people.

McPhee said these sorts of pickups are performed once or twice a year and he expects another effort later this year.

"We as a law enforcement agency have an obligation to the area communities to apprehend these wanted individuals and bring them in to justice," McPhee said.

Some fugitives turned themselves in to area courts after they learned Michigan State Police were searching for them, McPhee said.

The name "Operation Dragnet 03" comes from a 1950s police TV show named "Dragnet," staring Jack Webb.
