E.L. business up, down

May 20, 2003

During the summer months, only about 25 percent of the student population remains on or around campus. As a result, businesses whose customers are mostly students see a big decrease in their staff.

Brandy Brown, manager of Noggins Hair Shop, 545 E. Grand River Ave., said people on her staff often leave for the summer.

"We've decreased our staff by about half since students left," Brown said. "Things slow down quite a bit this time of year."

Some businesses aren't as affected during the summer months because their age demographic is more broad-based than just students.

Eric Skusa, general manager of The Peanut Barrel Restaurant, 521 E. Grand River Ave., said the age demographic of his customers doesn't fluctuate much.

"Our demographic stays more constant than a lot of the other businesses because it is broad to begin with," he said.

Skusa added his business sees an increase during the summer months.

"The summer months are usually our better months because the weather is a lot nicer, which helps keep people coming in to eat even later into the night," Skusa said.
