Attacking Annika

Vijay Singh must realize he plays on the pro golf tour, not the men's, so can Sorenstam

Discussion in the golf world has shifted from Tiger Woods to Vijay Singh and his comments about Annika Sorenstam playing at the PGA Tour's Colonial tournament in Fort Worth, Texas next week.

Sorenstam, 32, is the first woman in 58 years to compete in the PGA and Singh is upset with her presence.

Singh said in an Associated Press interview on Sunday that he " hopes she misses the cut...because she doesn't belong out here."

On Tuesday, Singh tried to correct his statement by saying he did not want Sorenstam to miss the cut. But Singh said if he did miss it, he would want her to not make the cut either because "I don't want to have a woman beat me."

The problem is not having a woman on the tour, rather, it is the fact that Singh seems to be intimidated by more diversity.

As spectators we pay to see the best athletes compete, regardless of their race, sex or religion.

If we continue to allow stereotypes to plague our society, we wouldn't have ethnic athletes such as Yao Ming gracing our basketball courts. And we wouldn't have minorities such as Venus Williams dominating the tennis courts.

Singh should realize it is not the sex or race that defines a good athlete - it is the person that defines a good athlete. And sponsors feel Sorenstam is a good enough athlete to compete in the PGA. Sorenstam was invited, and as a minority himself, Singh should be open to having her on the tour.

Singh, in one aspect, makes a good argument. Sorenstam did not qualify to compete in the tour - she was invited. And it is questionable if it is fair that she was asked to play because some might view her invitation as marketing publicity for the Colonial.

Whatever the case, it is not fair for Singh to judge Sorenstam solely on being a woman.

Singh says the PGA is a man's tour and the men who compete are trying to make a living. But we doubt Sorenstam takes golf as a joke.

Singh even said Sorenstam is the best woman golfer so there is no reason for him to be so judgmental just because she is a woman.
