Gymnasts place 5th in last meet of season

The MSU gymnastics team placed fifth out of six teams at the NCAA Central Regional on Saturday in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

The Spartans amassed a total score of 194.575 to finish above Kent State, but behind Alabama, Auburn, Central Michigan and Oklahoma. The fifth-place finish ends MSU's season, but one Spartan might get a chance to compete at the NCAA Championships in two weeks in Lincoln, Neb.

Freshman Sarah Alexander placed fifth in the all-around competition, qualifying her to be the Central Region's alternate at the national competition.

Shimek wins 3 awards

Senior forward Syreeta Bromfield and freshman forward Liz Shimek combined to take home five honors at the women's basketball team's annual awards banquet Friday at the Berkowitz Complex.

Bromfield was named the team's Player of the Year after leading MSU in scoring with 14.7 points per game and earned second-team All-Big Ten accolades. Bromfield also won the Best Defensive Player Award. She averaged 2.0 steals per game and amassed five or more steals in four different games this year.

Shimek took home the Best Rebounder Award (9.1 per game), an award for being the most aggressive player and another for being the best scholar-athlete.

'U' splits with Indiana

The MSU baseball team split four games against Indiana this weekend. The Spartans (9-20 overall, 3-7 Big Ten) salvaged their second win of the series against the Hoosiers (22-9, 7-5) with an eight-run seventh inning Sunday.

"We had one hit until the seventh inning and in the seventh inning, we had eight," MSU manager Ted Mahan said. "We're playing very well right now and our confidence is at the highest level it's been all year."

Senior right-hander Pat Gill (0-5) lost a pitching battle Friday. He threw a career-high 7 1/3 innings, but MSU still lost 4-2. MSU won Saturday's first game 6-1 behind strong pitching. But lost 6-5 in the nightcap.
