Men's tennis takes on Michigan

April 2, 2003

The MSU men's tennis team hosts intrastate rival Michigan today, marking the 100th meeting of the schools.

74th-ranked MSU (10-9 overall, 1-3 Big Ten) is looking for a reversal of fortune against the 61st-ranked Wolverines (5-9, 0-4). The Spartans have lost seven of their last eight dual meets and are on the losing side of a 17-81-1 all-time record against U-M.

Recent history hasn't been kind to either school, though.

MSU has lost seven of its last eight matches, and hasn't beaten Michigan, home or away, since 1992. U-M is riding a five-game losing skid heading into tonight's matchup.

Junior Eric Simonton has set the pace for MSU this season, posting a 19-13 record and capturing the team's lone match win against No. 13 Minnesota on Sunday. Simonton has been on a hot streak of late, winning his last four matches.

U-M is led by Canton, Ohio, native Michael Rubin. Rubin has Michigan's best individual record at 21-8.

The meet will begin at 6 p.m. at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
