Lugnuts break even

After their first seven games were postponed, the Lansing Lugnuts finally started the season this weekend, compiling a 2-2 record on the road.

Lansing evened its record on Sunday by splitting a twinbill with the South Bend Silver Hawks (2-5) in South Bend, Ind.

Two runs in the fifth inning was all it took for South Bend to earn a 2-1 win. The Lugnuts battled back in the nightcap, capitalizing on four South Bend errors to down the Hawks 6-1. Lansing lefty Carlos Vasquez (0-1) took the loss in the first game, while right-hander Anderson Tavarez earned a win in his first start of the season during the second matchup.

On Saturday, Lansing came up short against the Hawks in a 1-0 pitchers' duel. Right-handed hurler Frederico Baez (0-1) took the loss for the Lugnuts.

Friday's game against the South Bend Silver Hawks made up for lost time, as the game lasted nearly four hours.

The Lugnuts secured a 3-2 victory in the 15th inning when left fielder Felix Pie scored on a single off the bat of first baseman Kevin Collins. Six Lugnut pitchers were used in the game, with southpaw Mark Carter (1-0) throwing the final three innings for the win.

Lansing closed the series in South Bend on Monday with a doubleheader. Results were not available at the time of press.
