Golfers in the midst of 3-day tournament

The MSU women's golf team is competing in its third tournament of the spring season at the 31st annual SunTrust Gator Gold Invitational in Gainesville, Fla. The 16 teams teed off at 8 a.m. today. The final round will feature a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

The tournament is being held at the University of Florida's par 27, 6,701-yard University Golf Course. There are six teams ranked in the top 25 at the competition.

Alexander helps beat trio of East Coast foes

After the invitational, the Spartans will head to the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas, on March 24-26.

The MSU gymnastics team finished first out of four teams in Piscataway, N.J. with a score of 195.450 - the second highest score of the season. Host Rutgers finished in second place with 193.700, Yale and Brown finished with 191.900 and 191.500, respectively.

Sarah Alexander, a freshman from North Carolina, won the all-around title with a score of 39.425 and won the floor exercise with a career-high score of 9.975.

Crew teams garner 1st, 2nd-place times

The MSU women's crew team beat Clemson on Lake Hartwell on Saturday. The Spartans began their day with a win when the novice four team placed first with a time of 8 minutes, 29.2 seconds. Next, the second varsity four team almost gained another first-place finish with a time of 7:56.3, 2.7 seconds behind the Tigers.

Manz wins shot put; Carson makes NCAAs

It was a good spring break for the men and women's track teams. Junior Steve Manz won the shot put at the Alex Wilson Invitational at Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., on Saturday. Manz won the event with a throw of 59-6 3/4.

Freshman Brad Gebauer tied for third in the pole vault, clearing 16-4 3/4, however, he fell short of the NCAA provisional qualifying height.

For the women's team, junior Michelle Carson placed third at the Alex Wilson Invitational on Friday in the 5,000-meter run. Carson ran an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 16:24.59 at last weekend's Big Ten Indoor Championships.

Tennis loses for fifth time in 6 attempts

The MSU men's tennis team continued its recent slide with a 5-2 loss to Oklahoma on Saturday.

The setback was the Spartans third in a row and drops MSU's record to 9-5 after beginning the season 8-0.

The Spartans won the doubles portion of the match, taking two of three from the Sooners.

Senior Jimmy McGuire picked up MSU's only victory in singles play with a 6-4, 6-0 win.

Softball continures to rack up victories, runs

The MSU softball team won five of six contests this weekend at the Speedline Invitational in Plant City, Fla.

The Spartans (15-4) scored 33 runs in their five victories, while allowing just seven in those games.

The only loss for MSU came in the quarterfinals of tournament play to No. 4 Washington as the Spartans dropped a close 4-3 contest to the Huskies.

Junior pitcher Jessica Beech brought her overall record to 9-2 with two wins, including a three-hit shutout of Maryland.

Sluggers, Day get rocked by Ospreys

The MSU baseball team's early season struggles continued this weekend as the Spartans fell to North Florida, 13-5, in Jacksonville, Fla.

The loss was the sixth in a row for MSU (3-7) as the Spartans have been outscored 47-20 in that stretch. Sophomore pitcher Tim Day (1-2) was jumped on early by the Ospreys as he pitched four innings and gave up 10 runs in the loss.

MSU's game with Eastern Illinois was not available at the time of press.
