Researcher to appear in court

Scott Matthew Doree, a former MSU student charged with lying to federal authorities and misusing grant money, has been ordered to appear in a Grand Rapids federal district court at 2 p.m. today.

According to a complaint filed with the U.S. Attorney's office, Doree admitted to staging the theft of fraudulent research from the Biomedical and Physical Sciences Building and misusing more than $400,000 in federal grant money while a graduate student at MSU.

Police and FBI determined his graduate studies - finding a vaccine for a deadly pig bacteria - were fake and his "missing" research materials never existed.

If convicted, the 28-year-old Howell resident faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

He could not be reached for comment Sunday.

Doree's initial appearance will be at the Ford Federal Building, after which a federal grand jury will decide whether there is probable cause to bring the case to trial.
