War draws opinions from 'U'

Faculty, students debate conflict at panel discussion

Lawrence Busch made it clear he had no relation to President Bush.

"There is only one rogue nation in the world and that's led by one man - and he can be found in the White House," the sociology professor said after criticizing the Bush administration's relationship with Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

Busch joined a five-member panel of MSU faculty members who expressed its opinions on the conflict between the United States and Iraq at a forum Thursday night in the Union Ballroom. Some speakers supported a war with Iraq, while others said diplomacy could lead to a peaceful solution.

More than 400 students, faculty members and area residents packed into the room to join the moderated discussion. Speakers included professors Beth Kangas, Mohammed Ayoob and Barry Stein as well as James Madison College Dean Sherman Garnett. Each panelist spoke for seven minutes and audience members asked questions.

Ayoob said the United States has the means to fight a war against Iraq - and that the war is a given. "The decision to go to war has been taken a few weeks ago," he said. "You do not deploy troops
