Tennis team drops match to Cardinals

Unranked Ball State upset the No. 66 MSU men's tennis team, beating it 4-3 and ending its eight-match winning streak Saturday. The Cardinals claimed four of six singles matches against MSU after losing the doubles point.

Junior Eric Simonton and sophomore Cameron Marshall remained undefeated, 4-0, at the No. 1 doubles spot with an 8-6 victory. They are 9-3 on the season. Junior Chris Mitchell and sophomore Josh Efros were paired for the first time and took an 8-5 win, giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead.

Two of MSU's top singles players, senior Jimmy McGuire and sophomore Andrew Formanczyk, were sidelined with injuries.

Marshall also won a three-set match at No. 2 singles, moving to a 7-1 record this year. He leads the team with 15 wins. Senior Goran Topalo remained undefeated at No. 4 singles with a two-set win, improving his record to 7-0, after being sidelined last fall with injuries.

The Spartans will face No. 43 Notre Dame at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at home.

The MSU men's and women's track teams had an action packed weekend traveling to Ypsilanti for the EMU Classic and the remainder of women's track competing in New York City at the Armory Invitational.

Junior Steve Manz dominated his two events, winning the shot put and the weight throw.

In Ypsilanti, the women's track top finisher was freshman Justine Ivanoff, who took first in the shot put. Senior Erin Alexander grabbed a second-place finish in the long jump. She also had a third-place win in the triple jump.

At the Armory Invitational, seven women's track teammates finished in the top five of their respective events. Senior Ann Somerville performed a career-best, running 4:43.67 in the mile, with the time qualifying her for the NCAA Championships.

Junior Sarah Pepera also ran a career-high in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:57.23.
