'U' fans encouraged to donate cell phones
Verizon Wireless will donate $1 to MSU Safe Place for each donated wireless phone collected at two upcoming MSU sporting events. Safe Place is an on-campus domestic violence shelter.

Fans can donate the phones Saturday during the MSU men's basketball game against Purdue, and March 8 during the Spartan hockey team's contest with Western Michigan at Munn Ice Arena.

"This drive is a natural extension of our HopeLine program, which uses previously owned wireless phones to help domestic violence victims in threatening situations go about their day-to-day lives with less fear," said Wayne White, president of Verizon Wireless' Michigan Region. The MSU Athletics Department is co-sponsoring the drive.

"We hope that many of our fans respond to the call to turn in previously-owned wireless phones to help victims of domestic violence and our very own MSU Safe Place," MSU Athletics Director Ron Mason said.

Collections will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday and at 6 p.m. on March 8.
