Spartans come from behind to get sweep

The MSU men's tennis team scored an upset on the way to its third consecutive doubleheader-sweep and kept the undefeated season intact.

After a come-from-behind victory, the Spartans (6-0) gave No. 46 Western Michigan its first loss of the season.

MSU fell behind after winning just one of three matches in doubles play. But the Spartans were able to eke out a 4-3 victory after taking four of six singles matches from the Broncos.

In the nightcap, MSU had a much easier time on the courts, routing Valparaiso 7-0 for its fourth win in as many years against the Crusaders.

The Spartans return home Saturday to face Conference USA opponents DePaul and Xavier.

Hagerman, Hughes get individual titles

In its final dual meet of the season, the MSU men's and women's swimming and diving team split a pair of meets against Oakland University.

The women were able to defeat their counterparts 131-111, while the men tripped up against the Grizzlies, losing 124.5-117.5.

Freshmen Rachael Hagerman and Tesla Hughes took two of the six individual titles for the women in winning both the 50 and 100 freestyle races, respectively.

On the men's side, freshmen also shined for the Spartans as David Habel won the 1000-meter freestyle and Rudolf Wagenaar won the 200-meter backstroke.

Next up for MSU are the BIg Ten championships. The women travel to West Lafayette, Ind., on Feb. 19, while the men's portion of the championships begin Feb. 27 in Ann Arbor.

Willmann, Brady still perfect in doubles

The MSU women's tennis team split a pair of home meets over the weekend.

The 70th-ranked Spartans (3-3) shut out Bowling Green on Friday 7-0 but were upended by Eastern Michigan 5-2 Saturday.

The loss to the Eagles was the first home loss MSU has suffered this season.

The freshmen doubles team of Jean Willmann and Shelley Brady improved its record to 5-0 on the season as they went 2-0 over the weekend.

Losses in two three-set thrillers stopped the Spartans from keeping their undefeated home record in tact as MSU's No. 2 and No. 3 singles players - Willmann and senior Asa Liden - dropped matches.

The Spartans' homestand continues next weekend as they host DePaul and Miami (Ohio).

Track, field defeated by Fighting Irish

The MSU men's and women's track teams suffered defeat in their first dual meets of the season Friday.

Against Notre Dame, the men fell to the Fighting Irish 93-54, while the women lost 94-67.

On the men's side, freshman Julien Williams excelled in defeat as he won the long jump and took second place in the triple jump.

Two freshmen women placed in the 800-meter run as Aimee Keenan won the event, while Sarah Stornant finished third.

MSU returns to South Bend, Ind., next weekend for the Meyo Invitational, which will take place Friday and Saturday.
