Lansing - Not even the sound of Lt. Gov. John Cherry pounding the gavel could drown out the cheers and applause directed toward Michigan's first female governor during her first State of the State address.
Gov. Jennifer Granholm walked through the state House's chamber doors with confidence in Michigan, as well as her messages for the people. Inside, she issued a straightforward directive about the troubles of the state's budget.
In the audience, MSU President M. Peter McPherson said her message was heard as she addressed several key issues - including healthcare, education and budget shortcomings.
"Overall, I expect this speech should be very well received," he said.
Those listening in the chamber featured a 'who's who' in state politics and a smorgasbord of guests such as 14-year-old Brittany Young of Ann Arbor.
"It's an experience and a privilege to be able to come - not a lot of kids my age get to come," Brittany said, accompanied by her parents. "It was most interesting when she spoke about education because it affects me."
Brittany said she was excited to be present for the first Michigan State of the State address to be given by a female governor.
"That's a great accomplishment for women of Michigan and another step for women in the world," she said.
Even Granholm's critics on the opposite side of party lines were ready to commend her effort.
"Out of healthy debate comes more quality solutions," said Sen. Bruce Patterson, R-Canton Twp., who was interested in discussion about prescription drugs and the environment.
Michigan's Teacher of the Year and MSU alumna Sue Gutierrez received a thumbs-up as Granholm thanked her and Michigan's teachers.
"I don't think teachers have heard that kind of positive rhetoric in years," Gutierrez said. "It gives us something to strive for."
Gutierrez said she enjoyed the vibe and vigor of Granholm's speech. "I appreciated her energy - it can filter through to the whole state of Michigan," she said.
"I appreciated the attention given to the military family - we have to be supportive of our patriots at home and abroad."
