United way expects $400,000 recovery

January 29, 2003

Capital Area United Way attorneys are expecting to recover only a small percentage of the at least $1.9 million embezzled over the past seven years.

Attorneys for the chapter have arranged for former finance chief Jacquelyn Allen-MacGregor to sell some of her assets. She is accused by the chapter of the embezzlement and is thought to own about 60 horses and a horse farm in Manchester.

"(Her attorneys) don't have any defenses," the chapter's attorney David Houston said. "I would hope to get $400,000 to $500,000 for the assets."

Houston said the investigation has prevented Allen-MacGregor from spending money since the civil lawsuit was filed, but she spent most of the money before the scandal was uncovered.

"It's unlikely we'll ever get all the assets back," he said.
