Spartans slide past Butler, spank Raiders

The MSU men's tennis team opened the season with a sweep in a home doubleheader.

After falling behind to Butler in the first match, the Spartans (2-0) were able to sneak out a 4-3 victory over the Bulldogs.

Against Wright State, MSU didn't drop a single set, routing the Raiders 7-0.

This marks the third consecutive year the Spartans shutout Wright State.

The two weekend wins make it three consecutive years in which MSU has triumphed in its season opener.

MSU will continue a homestand this weekend with a doubleheader against Toledo and Dayton.

The Spartans tangle with the Rockets at 10 a.m. and the Flyers at 4 p.m. Saturday at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.


Tennis team nabs first victoy over flames

The MSU women's tennis team notched its first win of the season over the weekend.

After falling to No. 8 Vanderbilt and Louisville by scores of 7-0 and 5-2, respectively, the Spartans (1-2) trounced Illinois-Chicago 6-1 in their home opener.

MSU never trailed as they set the tone by winning all three doubles matches before winning five of six singles matches.

The Spartans' next contest is against Toledo at 10 a.m. Sunday at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.


Grapplers win 1 of 3 against tough foes

The MSU wrestling team experienced mixed results over the weekend.

In the Cliff Keen/National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals, the 16th-ranked Spartans (1-2) upset No. 4 Cornell before falling to Big Ten foes No. 5 Ohio State and No. 3 Minnesota in Columbus, Ohio.

The nation's top 16 teams were invited to compete in the event.

MSU returns to action with the Big Ten conference opener against Northwestern on Friday in Evanston, Ill.


Swimmers, divers have mixed results at meet

The MSU swimming and diving team had yet another up and down weekend.

Last weekend, the men (4-1 overall, 2-1 Big Ten) defeated both Northwestern and Ball State, while the women (3-1, 1-1) split by falling to the Wildcats and besting the Cardinals.

In Friday's meet against Ohio State, MSU split with the Buckeyes as the women defeated their counterparts from Columbus 138-105, while the men fell 147-96.

Saturday, the men's side of the team made a huge statement by upsetting previously undefeated and 16th-ranked Purdue 131-112 in East Lansing.

This weekend the women host Penn State and Indiana at 6 p.m. Friday and again at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

The men host Penn State on Saturday at noon. All matches will take place at the Charles McCaffree Pool in the IM Sports-West building.


Track team finishes last among 4 teams

The MSU men's track team had a difficult time in Ann Arbor.

In a meet that included Michigan, Indiana and Kent State, the Spartans finished last.

The Hoosiers took first place in the event, while the Wolverines and Golden Flashes finished second and third, respectively.

MSU returns to action again in Ann Arbor on Saturday for the Red Simmons Invitational.


Gymnastics team sill winless in 3 meets

In a close match-up, the MSU gymnastics team fell to Iowa State this past weekend.

The Spartans lost to the Cyclones by a 196.000-193.325 margin in Ames, Iowa.

The setback leaves MSU still searching for their first win of the season, as their record falls to 0-3.

The Spartans travel to Columbus, Ohio on Saturday to face Ohio State.
