MLK Day is worth recognizing, celebrating; vision wasn't to give 'U' an extra hour of sleep

Martin Luther King Jr. did not fight so you could stay home and dream. Monday is a time to celebrate the philosophy and personality of King. More importantly, it is a time to go outside of your comfort zone and celebrate people.

Last year, the MSU Board of Trustees voted to officially cancel classes on MLK Day after a three-year trial period proved the day's events were well-attended. Before its final decision, the fate of the holiday rested on the number of participants in commemorative events. Now that we have the day off, we should not think of it as an extended vacation or a three-day weekend.

People who do not participate should feel guilty.

MSU does a good job observing the MLK holiday. It has gone out of its way to plan activities leading up to the holiday. It also provides events that take place after the actual date for commemoration. Attending the sponsored activities allows all ethnicities to learn more about King, beyond his famous "I Have a Dream" speech.

King primarily focused on promoting unity. It is wonderful to see all races across campus come together and take time to celebrate his legacy. MSU by far is one of the most diverse Big Ten universities and that, in and of itself, deserves celebration.
