Bobby's den

Williams' new position with Lions is a good fit; kudos to Watts, Miller for success after Spartans

The Lions are hoping to gain from MSU's pain. Former MSU head football coach Bobby Williams is now employed as running backs coach for the Detroit Lions. Williams will no longer be handling college athletes, but professionals.

Since the departure of Barry Sanders, the Lions have been running backward and are in desperate need of a forward push. Bobby Williams is a talented individual and will bring experience to the table and help the Lions move the ball forward.

Congratulations to Williams for finding work in such a short amount of time. Maybe we will see Spartan Wide Receiver Charles Rogers and Williams on the same team again.

The time and dedication Williams has given to MSU is greatly appreciated. We want to wish him well now that he has his foot inside the NFL door.

MSU officials bought out Williams' contract for $550,000 last year. Williams served as MSU running backs coach for 10 years prior to taking over for Nick Saban before the Florida Citrus Bowl in 1999.

Along with Bobby Williams, two other recently departed coaches have found new jobs. Kudos to Morris Watts, who served as interim head coach after Williams' termination for his new position as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Mississippi State University. During his Spartan tenure, Watts served as the offensive coordinator.

Bill Miller came to MSU after serving as defensive coordinator at University of Miami (Fla.) for three seasons. He will be going back to his old stomping grounds as linebackers coach for the University of Florida. He also served as a defensive coordinator for MSU.

We want to wish Williams, Watts and Miller success as they embark in different areas. They all are talented, dedicated and determined individuals. They all have contributed to MSU in various ways and will do the same at their new locations. Congratulations.
