Coach regionally recognized

December 6, 2002

MSU field hockey head coach Michele Madison was named West Region Coach of the Year on Thursday for her accomplishments this season.

With Madison on the sidelines, the No. 3 Spartans had the most successful year in program history, setting records for games won (23) and goals scored in a season (91) while earning the club's first Final Four berth in its history.

The team also won its first Big Ten Tournament championship Nov. 10 by defeating intrastate rival Michigan 3-0.

MSU's 10-year head coach also reached several milestones of her own during the year, including her 150th career victory on Oct. 12, and snagged her 100th win on the sidelines for the Green and White just three games later.

The 2002 Ditz/NFHCA Division I National Coach of the Year will be announced Jan. 11.
