Women's basketball kicks off season

Senior forward Syreeta Bromfield was labeled one of 30 Players to Watch for the Senior CLASS Award, presented annually to the country's senior player of the year for NCAA Division I men's and women's basketball.

The Kingston, Jamaica, native led the Spartans in points and rebounds per game last season, averaging 15.6 and 6.5, respectively. As a junior, Bromfield also was named to the All-Big Ten second team.

Through two exhibition games this year, she has tallied 36 points and hauled in 10 boards.

Bromfield is one of two Big Ten players to make the list. Ohio State forward Courtney Coleman is the second.

MSU will open its regular-season play Saturday by hosting the Spartan Chevrolet Classic at Breslin Center. The Spartans tip off with Fresno State at 2 p.m. Valparaiso and Miami (Ohio) are set to do battle at 4 p.m.

Win or lose, MSU will play again at 2 p.m. Sunday. If the Spartans defeat the Bulldogs, they will play the winner of the Valparaiso-Miami game for the championship. If MSU loses to Fresno State, they will play for the consolation.

Baseball team inks 5 more ballplayers

Manager Ted Mahan announced five players have inked with MSU, signing National Letters of Intent for the 2004 season.

Right-handed pitchers Craig Brookes of Naperville, Ill., and Clay Kovac of Mundelein, Ill., and southpaw Spencer Hahn of Findlay, Ohio, comprise Mahan's list of pitching recruits. Troy Krider of Auburn, Ind., will add depth to the infield, while Kris Morris of Jenison rounds out the class, working behind the plate.

MSU baseball also is searching for team managers. Anyone interested should contact head coach Ted Mahan at (517)355-4486.
