Wrestlers set to get underway at Eastern

The MSU wrestling team will open its 2002-03 season this Saturday at the Eastern Michigan Open in Ypsilanti.

The team is returning eight-letter winners and 14 starters and is ranked preseason No. 11 nationally by InterMat Wrestling.

Seven of the teams wrestlers are ranked in the top 20 individual rankings. Senior Gray Maynard ranks fifth at 157 pounds, senior Nik Fekete ranks sixth at 197 pounds and freshman Nick Simmons makes his collegiate debut ranked 11 in the 125-pound division.

The wrestlers’ first home meet will be the Michigan State Open Nov. 9-10 at Jenison Field House.


Field hockey finishes regular season away

The No. 5 MSU field hockey team will be wrapping up its season on Saturday in Columbus, Ohio, for a noon matchup with Ohio State.

After going a perfect 10-0 at home with a 3-1 defeat over Kent State on Oct. 23, the Spartans (17-2 overall, 4-1 Big Ten) look to end the season on a high note against the Buckeyes (7-8, 2-3).

The Spartans return to action Nov. 8-10 for the Big Ten Tournament.


Cross country teams battle for Big Ten title

The women’s cross country team will be defending their 2001 Big Ten Championship title this Sunday in West Lafayette, Ind.

The team, which is currently ranked No. 23, will enter the 2002 Big Ten Championships in a little better health.

Senior Cindy Durocher is back from a hamstring injury.

The team is lead by juniors Michelle Carson and Jamie Krzyminski who have been competitive all season.

The men’s cross country team will also be making a run for the Big Ten Championship title in West Lafayette.

The team will be lead by Chris Toloff whose last performance at Pre-Nationals on Oct. 19th earned him a fifth place finish out of 244 runners and the Big Ten Athlete of the Week honors.
