Pigskin Prognosticators

One game separates football forecasters

November 22, 2002
The Pigskin Prognosticators

It looks like the race for the Heisman Trophy is not the only competition that will need the full college football schedule to determine a winner. After 11 weeks, only one game separates the most handsome Pigskin Prognosticators of the season.

The dynamic duo disagreed just once as Death Ro went 4-1, while McSkinny went 3-2. Colorado's triumph over Iowa State was the deciding factor in last week's picks.

Rivalry week in college football has rubbed off on Death Ro (38-21) and McSkinny (37-22) as, allegedly, there were some spicy words between the forecasting foes. It'll be interesting to see if it has any effect on their picks.

MSU vs. Penn State

With a bowl game completely out of reach, the Spartans (4-7 overall, 2-5 Big Ten) attempt to play the role of spoiler - not token road team - on senior day in Happy Valley. The Nittany Lions (8-3, 4-3) could end the regular season with four consecutive wins with a victory.

Death Ro - Even the Spartans that were expected to contend for a Big Ten championship would have had problems in this one. So, it's almost laughable to think the Spartans can get a win. I don't foresee PSU tailback Larry Johnson getting 2,000 yards. However, expect him to be effective enough for the Nittany Lions to dominate the game and the clock. I think it's against my football religion to pick against the team that's celebrating senior day. PSU 49, MSU 24

McSkinny - I'd love to see the Green and White pull off the miracle win as much as any Spartan fan. I mean, it's my last game as a student, too. But I just can't see it happening.

I think Charles Rogers will do everything he can to keep it close. Although, I'd say Rogers will be playing out of his mind for the NFL scouts, not the Spartans. But who cares? We need whatever we can get.

But ultimately, this game will be won at the line of scrimmage. And that's a bad thing for MSU.

The Nittany Lions have one of the nation's best defensive lines and their offensive line would love to get Johnson to the 2,000-yard mark. So don't be fooled, Penn State has plenty to play for. PSU 35, MSU 24

No. 2 Ohio State vs. No. 12 Michigan

A trip to the Fiesta Bowl is at stake for the Buckeyes (12-0, 7-0), and the Wolverines (9-2, 6-1) are looking to upend their undefeated rivals in Ohio Stadium.

Death Ro - A lot of people think Meechigan is going to pull off the predictable upset - like it's done so many times in the past. Well, I have five words for you: Not so fast my friend. That was the consistently disappointing John Cooper era, and this is the Jim Tressel era.

If you ask Tressel three weeks, two months or even 123 days from now, "How many days to the next OSU-Meechigan game?" he would know the exact number.

What does that mean? It means he'd cut off his pinkie fingers, big toes and shave his head before he let a more talented Buckeye team get upset by the Wolverweenies. So don't expect this to be as close as everybody thinks. Isn't it senior day or something in Columbus? OSU 20, U-M 10

McSkinny - Please, this one is primed for the classic Buckeye blunder. Ohio State just can't go undefeated, it's written somewhere in college football dogma.

Both teams have great defenses, but the Maize and Blue have the better offense. And as much as I hate to admit it, that'll be the difference that pushes the Wolverweenies over the top.

I'm not a big fan of picking U-M to win, but there's just something funny about watching OSU's championship dreams continually falling one game shy. U-M 17, OSU 14

No. 3 Washington State vs. Washington

The Cougars (9-1) are favored for just the seventh time in 46 to take home the Apple Cup. A win would guarantee Washington State the Pac-10 title and at least a place in the Rose Bowl. But Washington (6-5) knows this is a rivalry game and records don't matter.

McSkinny - I don't care if it's a rivalry game or not, the Cougars are for real.

Jason Gesser is one of the nation's best quarterbacks, and with guys like Mike Bush and Devard Darling on the receiving end it won't matter what the Huskies do.

Washington State knows what's at stake in this game, so don't expect them to blow it with home-field advantage. Besides, the Cougars know they've still got a shot at the Fiesta Bowl if Ohio State lays the perennial egg. Wazzu 45, UW 24

Death Ro - When the Apple Cup is at stake, throw the records out the window - even Gesser's records. I can see the Huskies making this one close, and at one point I thought they could even pull the upset. Then, I realized it was the last home game of the year for the Cougars - and you know what that means. Wazzu 31, UW 24

No. 4 Oklahoma vs. No. 24 Texas Tech

The Sooners (9-1) and Red Raiders (8-4) are set to battle for the Big 12 South title and right to play Colorado in the Big 12 Championship game.

Texas Tech is coming off a big win against Texas, but Oklahoma has home-field advantage.

McSkinny - I love Kliff Kingsbury and the Red Raiders as this season's giant killers. But we're talking Oklahoma and we're talking Oklahoma in Norman. It's just not going to happen.

Lighting struck last week for Texas Tech and it's just not going to happen again. Unlike the Longhorns, the Sooners defense can't even comprehend the word choke. OU 24, TT 10

Death Ro - There isn't a coaching staff in the land better than Bob and Mike Stoops when it comes to preparing to shut down a one-dimensional attack. Texas Tech and Kingsbury are one-dimensional.

So here's what to expect. First things first, I, poppa, freaks all the honeys, dummies, Playboy bunnies, those wanting money. Second, an unidentified flying linebacker will decapitate Kingsbury on a blitz. OU 16, TT 10

No. 7 USC vs. No. 25 UCLA

In arguably the best rivalry game on the West Coast, the Trojans (8-2) look to win their fourth straight over their cross-town rival at the Rose Bowl. The Bruins (7-3) are riding a three-game winning streak.

Death Ro - Fact: USC does not like to be referred to as Southern Cal. See you learn something every weekend from the Pigskin Prognosticators.

Now to football, I wrecked my brain about this one all week. USC has been money for me, all but once this season. But UCLA is eight points away from being a one-loss team and undefeated in the Pac-10. Keep an eye out for USC freshman wideout Mike Williams - a future Fred Biletnikoff award winner (it's not a fact, but bet on it and send me 23.9715 percent of the profit). Don't bet on this game, though, because it's too close to call. USC 26, UCLA 21

McSkinny - Whether they like it or not, the Trojans represent Southern Cal. But regardless, they've been doing some serious representing all season.

Carson Palmer is finally having the season the college football world has been expecting. It's just too bad for Trojan fans he wasted his first 30 years in Los Angeles.

But it's better late than never. USC 31, UCLA 24
