Panhellenic Council elects new leaders

November 19, 2002

MSU's Panhellenic Council elected new members to its executive council last week.

Each of the 13 sororities voted for each of the positions. Eight positions were filled, including a ninth position, vice president of communications, that was added to the council. The groups elect new members once a semester. The new members of both the Interfraternity and Panhellenic councils will be installed at 8 p.m. Thursday during the second annual Greek Awards Gala at the Lansing Center, 333 E. Michigan Ave. in Lansing.

"Everything ran really smoothly," current Panhellenic Council President Jennifer Nichols said. "All of the women who ran for a position did an excellent job."

The finance and Spanish senior said the proposed slate of candidates all did great jobs with their speeches. She also said although Kristen Loney ran ran unopposed for president, she still made excellent argument.

"Getting all the chapters to work together was one of her main points," Nichols said. "She basically stressed making our organizations into more of a community."

Along with Loney, finance junior Carrie Dietiker was elected new vice president for administration. The new vice president for internal affairs is communication and French sophomore Anna Lutey.

Accounting sophomore Suzie Luplow will serve as vice president for internal affairs. The new vice president for finance is general management junior Abby Boers.

"I have enjoyed the position by being my chapter's treasurer," Boers said. "I'm looking forward to branching out to doing it on a bigger scale."

Communication junior Allison Amrine and education junior Crystal Smith have been elected vice president for internal recruitment and vice president for external recruitment, respectively. Special education junior Carlye Wilk is the new vice president for programming.

Advertising junior Lauren Singer will serve as the first Panhellenic Council vice president of communications and is excited about her new position.

"I feel extremely confident about this position," she said. "I think I can apply things I've learned in my major to it. I'm looking forward to working with other women in Panhel as well because it's really a team effort."

As Nichols' time as president winds down, she praised incoming members.

"I'm extremely confident in them," she said. "I think it's a really great group of women. If they use half of their potential they have you'll see great things from the greek community."

Nichols also praised the incoming president.

"I'm very confident in her as well," she said. "She did a wonderful job as president of her house. She's really the kind of person I want to see lead our organizations."
