Greeks select new executive leaders

November 8, 2002

Jennifer Granholm and Dick Posthumus weren’t the only ones sweating bullets this week in elections.

Members in 21 of MSU’s 29 Interfraternity Council groups selected new executive officials Wednesday night at Lafayette Square in Brody Complex.

“I feel very good about the process,” said Amy Radford, assistant director of Student Life. “The men who looked to serve a leadership role focused on many of the key issues affecting the greek community.”

Each of the seven positions on the council’s executive board were up for election Wednesday - with the highest position being council president.

Anthony Morabito beat out two other candidates and will begin his term as council president next semester.

“I’m excited to get into a new position and all the things that come along with it,” he said. “I think myself along with the other new members of the executive board have a lot to offer.”

Along with Morabito, finance junior Amit Mehta was elected new council vice president for administration.

Finance junior Jonathan Green was elected vice president for finance. International relations junior Ryan Kohlmann is the vice president for recruitment.

The new vice presidents for internal and external recruitment are biochemistry junior Steve Schauer and interdisiplinary studies sophomore Jim Divita, respectively.

Instrumental music education senior Nick Morris is the new vice president of membership.

“I hope with this new executive board we can just come together,” Morabito said. “We’ll be helping each other as much as possible.”

One of the issues Morabito discussed was the importance of the council bettering its relationship with the community. Each candidate also stressed the importance of the recruitment process and philanthropy.

“We need to get out to the people,” Morabito said. “We can’t just wait until they come to us.”

Current council president Paul Hage shared his thoughts on the new executive board.

“I’m very confident in the new group of people who have been selected,” the international relations senior said. “What’s most impressive about them is that they have a lot of experience holding leadership positions.”

Hage also shared his feelings on his eventual replacement.

“He has a lot of experience and is an intelligent, thoughtful kid,” he said. “I think Anthony’s the perfect person to continue with the success we’ve had.”
