Former MSU hockey player Jason Woolley was waived by the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday.
Sabres spokesman Gregg Huller said Woolley will be sent down to Buffalo's American Hockey League affiliate in Rochester if he's not claimed by another NHL team by Friday.
Woolley, a defenseman, had no goals, three assists and 29 penalty minutes in 14 games with the Sabres this season. He was also minus-1 in the plus/minus rating.
Woolley played at MSU from 1989-91, earning All-American honors in his final season. He recently donated $115,000 to MSU's College of Osteopathic Medicine to help underwrite the cost of the college's new Manipulative Medicine Laboratory.
The 33-year-old was in his sixth season with Buffalo after spending the previous six years going between Washington, Florida and Pittsburgh. He has scored 57 goals and 192 assists in 548 NHL games in his career.
If Woolley ends up in Rochester, he will be teammates with former MSU goaltender Ryan Miller.
