Club organizes Mac users

November 22, 2002
Jason Tye, a telecommunication graduate student and president of the MSU Apple Club, left, stands with Winston Glass, a telecommunication senior and vice president of the club, center, and Bruce Rockwell, a telecommunication senior and Apple representative, Wednesday night in the Union after their club"s meeting. The club"s purpose is to raise awareness of Apple projects and for its members to share different Apple tricks and ideas.

Fresh out of high school, Jason L. Tye was convinced he knew everything there was to know about computers.

"I was a big PC fan," Tye said. "I built my own PC and everything."

But that was before the telecommunication graduate student started working with the Apple Macintosh Operating System.

"The more I started learning about graphic design and digital video, the more I saw how well the Mac handles media," he said. "It's much faster and easier."

Tye now heads the MSU Apple Club, a computer club designed to provide a forum for discussion about Apple products. Before organizing the club, Tye had asked Brian Winn, assistant professor of telecommunication, why there wasn't already one on campus.

"He said, 'Oh, there was one. It just fell out of works,'" Tye recalled. "There wasn't a lot of interest in it."

That's when Tye decided to revamp the club that was founded in 2000.

"Really I'd like to give people a place to come and see what you can do with the Mac," he said. "The club is not made up of a bunch of people sitting around talking about how great Macs are. It's more about what you can use them for."

Winn acts as the Apple Club faculty adviser and said the group is for people who do not want to follow the norm regarding computer use.

"We'd like to offer people the option of using a Mac as opposed to Windows," Winn said. "They're just in the process of rejuvenating the club. No. 1, the club is trying to take people who have Macintoshes and let them share the cool things that Macs can do."

The majority of students attending Wednesday's club meeting were not even Macintosh owners.

"That's cool to me," Tye said. "That's just what I want for the club. Half the people that showed up have just used Macs in their classes or at work and just want to know more about them."

Leaders at the meeting showed a demo using Apple's iMovie software, discussing how to shoot and edit a video. Members also reviewed the game "Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast."

"I know a lot of people who don't use Macs to the full extent that they can," Tye said. "I want people to know more about the great things that they can do."

The MSU Apple Club's next meeting is tentatively planned for the first week of December. For more information on the club, visit www.msu.edu/~msac.
