Proposal to be debated

October 11, 2002

ASMSU will meet with 500 representatives from the state’s private and public colleges to rally against Proposal 4 this weekend.

The rally will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Lawrence Technological University in Southfield to urge students to vote no on the proposal in the Nov. 5 general election.

Proposal 4 aims to take 90 percent of Michigan’s tobacco settlement money and put it toward tobacco prevention and health care. The money would be reallocated from the Michigan Merit Award and the Life Sciences Corridor. The merit award gives $2,500 to incoming college freshmen who qualify.

The undergraduate student government, which has publicly denounced the proposal, wants to encourage students to vote in November.

“Students, I do believe, will have a pivotal role,” said Jared English, ASMSU’s director of university, governmental and budgetary affairs. “If last year’s student voting turnout prevails, this ballot proposal will pass.”

English, ASMSU Academic Assembly Chairperson Matt Clayson and other student leaders are coordinating the event.

“Essentially it’s a rah-rah rally,” English said. “It’s basically a rally where we try to push up everyone’s spirits for the November election.”
