Students living in Bryan Hall were making a lot of noise over a new rule that required them to keep doors closed. Their frustrations were understandable.
It seems the residents of MSUs only quiet dorm were being made to keep their doors closed during quiet hours - on weekdays 8 p.m. to 10 a.m. and midnight to 10 a.m. on weekends.
The Brody Complex hall is MSUs only quiet residence hall, those who live there are required to sign contracts stating they will adhere to rules or face designated consequences.
Bryan Hall government leaders deemed the rule inappropriate at its meeting Monday night, although residents still are expected to adhere to other quite hour regulations.
George Athenas, Brody Complex area coordinator for the Department of Residence Life, said the door issue was a misunderstanding. He said some mentors and students confused what was suggestion as a requirement.
Although Bryan Hall residents are expected to respect quiet hours, it is not right of dorm officials to force students to keep their doors closed.
Part of the on-campus living experience is the ability of having the option to keep your door open to meet, greet and socialize with passers-by.
It is better for the closed-door rule to be done away with and remain a suggestion to give students living in Bryan Hall the freedom to enjoy on-campus living, instead of being isolated during quiet hours.
Peace and quiet might not be an exception, but it is not always the rule when it comes to looking out for students best interests.
On-campus living is a unique experience, student should be able to make the most of it no matter what residence hall they live in.
