Greeks begin Recruitment

Sororities start finding members for first phase

October 3, 2002

Recruitment for MSU’s Panhellenic Council begins today.

The process consists of three components - phase A, phase B and preference.

“Phase A is really a getting to know you phase,” said Elana Pure, Panhellenic Council vice president of external recruitment. “We try to find things out about the girls and let the girls ask questions about each house.”

All 13 women’s greek organizations will be at the information session. Phase A is from 4-7 p.m. today in the main gym of IM Sports-West.

“It’s always a philanthropy project,” Pure said. “It allows the girls to see what a chapter is all about.”

With phase B, the women are able to select seven houses they would like to visit on Friday and Saturday. They are allotted a certain amount of time as buses take them from house to house.

“Each house always does some sort of project,” Pure said. “It always involves giving something back to the community.”

Pure said some houses will be coloring with school-age children, and groups do things like put together baskets and paint picture frames to be handed out in the community.

“It won’t be too arts and craftsy, though,” she said. “Obviously nothing to get them too dirty.”

Recruitment counselors were selected from each chapter to help potential members along this weekend.

“Their role is to help the girls walk through the process,” said Amy Radford, assistant director of Student Life. “They go through a variety of training sessions to help women make decisions about greek life.”

Pure said each chapter picks women worthy of the position and who have gone through formal recruitment. They also must hold a grade-point average of at least 2.5 and be of junior or senior status.

“They serve as our liaisons,” she said. “They’re the ones interacting with prospects everyday.”

Radford said Sunday’s activity is an reflective opportunity for women to ask themselves questions about the decision they’re about to make and what they learned and liked, or disliked, about each group.

Pure said some chapters are looking to diversify their houses, while others are looking for women to take on leadership roles. She also said no women will be excluded.

“Every single woman, if they follow the process right, will receive a bid,” she said. “I believe there’s a right place for every woman.”
