Rainy conditions and chilly temperatures could not deter about 20 devoted golfers from attending the first Happy Gilmore Golf Scramble at Forest Akers East Golf Course on Friday afternoon.

The University Activities Board event was slated for two weeks ago, but because of inclement weather, it was called off and rescheduled.

“I was really excited to play because I’m a big golfer,” Scott Wolfe said about the event that was canceled two weeks ago. “We got here and we were bummed because it was crazy raining.”

But the no-preference freshman was now standing on the practice green, ready to tee off the event.

“Golf is sweet because it’s like, all you,” Wolfe said. “It’s you versus the course. Sometimes it can be the greatest sport and sometimes the worst. It’s frustrating. Sometimes you can suck for just no reason.”

Sara Petroff, the board’s vice chairwoman of the arts, said participants paid $5 for nine holes of golf and a cart.

MSU golf paraphernalia was originally going to be awarded for longest drive, shortest drive and craziest swing, but instead, prizes for the best golfers were awarded because many golfers did not feel like being “crazy” in bad weather, Petroff said.

“I was just trying to make it fun,” the merchandise management senior said. “I didn’t want people to think, “Oh my gosh, I’m not that good - I don’t want to go to a tournament. I just want them to come out, have fun and win prizes.”

Petroff said she plans on organizing another golf scramble in the spring.

Meanwhile, board committee member Carly Gregg was surprised by the turnout.

“The golfers were anxious to come back,” the accounting senior said. “I’m surprised. There are some dedicated golfers out here. I knew golfers were crazy - but this is cold.”
