Mustard Plug skanks its way to Temple Club

The energized performances of ska-punk bands are always undeniably entertaining. So without further ado, Mustard Plug will be playing at midnight today at the Temple Club, 500 E. Grand River Ave. in Lansing.

The Grand Rapids sextet has been touring the nation from coast to coast with its infectious melodies of horn-supplied ska with an adequate tinge of punk since it first came into existence back in 1993.

Having just released its new album “Yellow #5,” it’s safe to say a lot of new material will have kids skankin’ and slammin’ at the Temple tonight.

If you’re unfamiliar with the new stuff, then there’s always the memorable oldies but goldies like “You” and “Lolita” to help you get into the mood.

And if the audience is lucky, the Mustard might play its illustrious rendition of The Verve Pipe’s “The Freshman.”

The three-piece powerchord punk of Working Class Jack and the ska-mayhem of Recess Rejects will open for the Mustard at 10 p.m.

So don’t dillydally anymore - find a ride, call a cab or just skip happily over to the Temple for a memorable night of ska-ing.

Doors open at 9 p.m. Cover is $5 for ages 21 and up and $10 for those 18 and up. For more information call (517)316-0400 or visit www.templeclub.com

Reckless jackasses expands show in ‘jackass’ movie

The most anticipated movie you’ve already seen, “jackass: the movie,” hits theaters today. And if you need a synopsis, you are truly stupid.

For those who arrived on Earth today, Johnny Knoxville and his band of, well, jackasses, hit the streets with reckless abandon. “Jackass” is sure to offend someone, but at the same time, be one of the year’s top grossing flicks.

For those investing in storyline and acting, check out Adam Sandler in “Punch-Drunk Love.” Sandler plays Barry Egan, a man on the run from thugs due to his addiction to phone sex hotlines. He lives under the abuse of his seven sisters, one of whom tries to set him up with Lena Leonard (Emily Watson).

When his date falls through, Barry’s hobby of collecting pudding coupons wins him a trip to Hawaii, where he continues to search for his mystery woman.

Paul Thomas Anderson, whose vision helps tell the stories of “Magnolia” (1999) and “Boogie Nights,” turns Sandler onto a more serious role in “Punch-Drunk Love” opposite Philip Seymour Hoffman and Luis Guzman. Both films open today at Celebration Cinemas, 200 E. Edgewood Blvd. in Lansing.

Check Your Shoes play funk, covers at Rick’s

If you like the vivacious tones of funk, then it’s time to “Check Your Shoes.”

The fairly new East Lansing band Check Your Shoes is performing at 10 p.m. Saturday at Rick’s American Café, 224 Abbott Road.

The band plays original tunes as well as covers, but mostly funk. All members are MSU students and a majority of them are part of the School of Music’s Jazz Studies Program.

The Shoes septet will open for Rev. Right-time and the 1st Cuzins of Funk, self-described as George Clinton meets the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The eight-piece band even features members who previously played for Kid Rock, George Clinton and MC Breed, fusing an entertaining explosion of disco, funk and rock.

Ages 21 and up are welcome with a $3 cover. For more information call (517)351-2285 or visit checkyourshoes.com and revrighttime.com.
