Tesitmony offers Southern soul, vocals

October 23, 2002

Dana Glover has a sultry voice that emanates with Southern charm as her long, brown, wavy hair gently caresses her beautiful features.

But this is about her music so we’ll focus on that, regardless of the fact that Glover has been a model since the young age of 16.

Raised on the sounds of gospel and old-school soul, Glover’s debut album “Testimony” explores musical themes of inspiration and expression, as her music and voice harmonize perfectly with each passing second.

Picking up the piano and saxophone by ear as a child, music was all Glover wanted to do. Growing up a small-town girl from North Carolina, she moved to New York, Nashville and eventually Los Angeles to pursue it.

Her big break came when she showcased for DreamWorks Records, which eventually led to a deserved contract.

As “Testimony” was coming together, her beautiful voice graced a couple of films before she’d even been heard, including “The Wedding Planner” and “Shrek.”

Now, the album is finally complete, and what an album it’s become.

With beautiful piano melodies and the soothing resonance of Glover’s southern lilt, songs overflow with character and passion.

Her voice carries such soul and strength, it’s astounding that a seemingly delicate person like Glover could produce it.

The record begins with the gospel fervor of “Rain” and it never subsides from there, with exquisite lyrics, “One tennis shoe on the ledge/One in mid-air/She feels the whispering breeze rushing through her hair.”

“Testimony” continues with the wonderful string arrangements and piano accords on the captivating “Thinking Over” - a sure hit from beginning to end.

And it just keeps going with the uplifting “Cherish,” the affectionate longing of “Maybe,” the soulful “Make It Real” and the romantic first emotions of the acoustic “Falling Into Love.”

Her voice is just so memorable and enrapturing, it never ceases to move a moment or capture a mood.

If you’ve ever wondered where the soul of Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder wandered off to, you’ll hear glimpses of them seeping through Dana Glover.
