Students enter photography contest

September 26, 2002

Taking pictures while studying abroad could prove worthwhile for more than just sentimental purposes.

The MSU Global Focus 2002 international photography competition is taking applications until Oct. 4. Applicants must have pictures from another country and may enter in one of its three categories - faculty and staff members, students and alumni. Up to three photos can be submitted per person.

Three winners and an undetermined number of honorable mentions will be chosen from each of the three categories by a panel of two MSU faculty members, a photographer and a studio owner from the community.

“The number of honorable mentions vary depending on the judges,” Jay Rodman, International Studies and Programs coordinator said. “There are usually 30 winning photos in each category with more in the student.”

Guidelines for the contest can be downloaded at www.isp.msu.edu/photocontest.

Entries must be in either slide or print format, and for the first time prints of high-resolution digital photos will be acceptable.

Professional photographers are excluded to encourage amateur participation.

The top three winners will have their work enlarged, framed and displayed in MSU’s International Center and at select MSU Alumni Association venues. The honorable mentions and rest of the entries will be hung in the conference room and lobbies of International Studies and Programs in the International Center.

“This contest was developed for several purposes,” Rodman said.

“We encourage students who go abroad to document their personal experiences and add a visual aspect to their international experiences by taking cameras along.

“And, of course, it’s a way to add international flavor to our lobby and hallways.”

English junior Kyle Martin, won an honorable mention in last year’s contest and is planning on entering again this year.

“It seemed like a nice way to show other people the beauty in other countries,” he said. “I do mission work in Haiti every year so my pictures are from there.”
