Field Hockey

The field hockey team split a pair of games in Norfolk, Va., during the weekend, falling to Old Dominion on Saturday, and defeating William & Mary on Sunday.

On Saturday, MSU managed to force nine-time national champion Old Dominion into overtime before falling to the Monarchs 3-2. Sophomore midfielder Annebet Beerman was the lone Spartan to score with a two-goal effort.

Beerman again headed the squad’s offense Sunday, scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win over William & Mary. MSU freshman goalie Christina Kirkaldy earned her first collegiate shutout in the win with four stops.

For her weekend efforts, Beerman was awarded Big Ten Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.

The team resumes play at 4 p.m. Friday at Ralph Young Field against St. Joseph’s.

Women’s soccer,

The women’s soccer team opened its season Sunday with a 4-0 victory against the Bowling Green Falcons, marking the third consecutive season-opening win for the Spartans.

Four players notched goals for MSU, including junior forward Tiffany Laskowski, freshman forward Emma Harris, junior midfielder Michelle Perun and sophomore midfielder Abby Shepherd. The 4-0 win was the highest goal total the women have achieved in a season opener since they defeated Valparaiso 10-0 in the 1993 season.

MSU’s home opener is against Eastern Michigan at 4 p.m. Friday at Old College Field.

Football

Minnesota freshman defensive tackle Brandon Hall was fatally shot in a dispute Friday night in Minneapolis, after the Golden Gophers defeated Southwest Texas State 42-0 in the season opener.

Hall, a Detroit native and 2000 graduate of Detroit’s Finney High School, was redshirted during the 2001 season and recorded a solo tackle in his 2002 debut for Minnesota.

Three men have been arrested in connection with the crime, but none have yet been charged.
