Group brings Latin comedy

September 13, 2002

Hispanic Heritage Month is kicking off with lots of laughs.

“Latinologues,” a skit-comedy show that focuses on Latino life in both humorous and serious dialogues, will be appearing at MSU for the first time at 7 p.m. today in the Kellogg Center Auditorium. Admission is free for students.

Marcelina Treviño-Savala, the coordinator for Chicano/Latino Student Affairs in the Office of Racial Ethnic Student Affairs said the show combines education with entertainment.

“It gives all students an opportunity to see something new, something cultural but in a humorous setting. It’s fun.”

The office also will be sponsoring educational events, lectures and activities throughout September in honor of Hispanic heritage, Treviño-Savala said. Times and locations for the events have yet to be announced.

The office is co-sponsoring the event along with the Department of Residence Life and Culturas de las Razas Unidas.

Adnoris Torres, co-chairperson of the student group, said he is looking forward to the comedy skits, especially since his group has worked since January to have them appear on campus.

“The show is going to be a look at Latino life, and (will) look at it from a funny, sometimes touching manner,” the international relations senior said. “It’s a great way for our story to be heard on a campus level.”

Torres is inviting all skit attendees to a party at the Union following the show. Sigma Lambda Beta, an international fraternity, is hosting a party in the Union Ballroom from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Sigma Lambda Beta is a Latino-based organization.

“We’re just planning to start throwing events,” Torres said.

The group is also planning a Latino Supper for discussion on Monday, which is Mexican Independence Day. The event will include cultural food and interactive discussion and will be held from 5-8 p.m. at the Cherry Lane Apartments Community Center, Torres said.

“We just want to bring people together,” he said.
