Commemorating Sept. 11

Today MSU and surrounding areas will be marking the one year anniversary of Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with these events.

On campus:

• 8:48 a.m.: Today the Beaumont Tower is ringing at the exact moment when the first plane hit. It will ring again when the other three planes crashed.

• 12:15 p.m.: A special service is being held at the Peoples Church, 200 W. Grand River Ave., in East Lansing.

• 7 p.m.: Tonight there will be a candlelight vigil at the rock on Farm Lane.In East Lansing.

• 9:45 a.m.: The East Lansing Fire Station No. 1, 1700 Abbott Road, is holding a remembrance ceremony in the time span of the collapse of the two World Trade Center towers. The memorial area is in place all day for people to light candles and sign a remembrance book.

In Haslett:

• 7 p.m.: Ground Zero recovery worker Steven Karageanes is speaking at the Haslett High School Performing Arts Center, 5450 March Road.

In Lansing:

• 9:45 a.m.: All Lansing fire stations are having a minute of silence and a minute of sirens followed by prayer and speeches from area leaders.

• 12 p.m.: All Lansing area churches are chiming their bells for five minutes and some churches are following with a service.

• 7 p.m.: Tonight the public is meeting at the steps of the state Capitol where candles will be distributed and a procession will be lead to Wentworth Park, at Michigan and Grand avenues.

• 7:30 p.m.: A series of commemorative events will then take place at Wentworth Park, at Michigan and Grand avenues, including prayer, poetry readings and musical performances.

• All day: The Capital Area United Way and the Volunteer Center of Mid-Michigan are sponsoring a day of caring. Volunteers are planting and landscaping at 30 locations throughout Lansing and East Lansing.
