Move over American flags and floral arrangements, Kirby the Puppy and Samantha the Kitten will appear on stamps today.
The duo is part of a campaign that urges pet owners to get their cats and dogs spayed or neutered.
People will be storming the stamp machines, the stamps are so cute they wont last, said Allie Phillips, the business manager for the Friends of Ingham County Animal Shelter. The shelter worked with the American Partnership for Pets and the U.S. Postal Service on the stamp project.
Spaying or neutering animals reduces the incidences of homeless pets, Phillips said.
It actually says spay and neuter right on the stamps, so people will definitely get the message, Phillips said.
The animals who appear on the stamps are survivors of an animal shelter in Connecticut. Since leaving the shelter, Kirby and Samantha have been adopted and spayed or neutered, Phillips said.
While kicking off the public sale of the stamps, organizers hope to spread the word that the shelter is available.
A lot of people dont realize that our facility has great animals, Phillips said.
Informational booths will be set up today at a Lansing post office, 4800 Collins Road, and the Mason post office, 173 W. Ash St., from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Stamp collectors and animal lovers can get Kirby and Samantha stamps in any of the nations 38,000 post offices.
